Udupi is the cultural heart of Coastal Karnataka. Within 15 minutes of the town center, you can reach Malpe Beach and board a boat to St. Mary's Island—a National Geological Monument known for its distinctive columnar basalt lava formations created millions of years ago.

Ten kilometers south of Udupi lies Kaup Beach, featuring a functioning 1901 British lighthouse on black coastal rocks. Visitors can climb to the observation deck between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM for a 360-degree ocean view.

Heading north, Maravanthe Beach is world-famous because NH-66 runs directly between the Arabian Sea on the left and the calm Souparnika River on the right. Inland, Karkala features the monolithic 42-foot Bahubali statue, and Moodbidri boasts the Thousand Pillar Jain Temple.

Start your morning with a traditional Udupi breakfast of Goli Baje, Masala Dosa, and filter coffee near Car Street, where culinary traditions originated that now define South Indian dining worldwide.

Spend your afternoon exploring the quiet courtyards of Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village or taking a boat ride to St. Mary's Island from Malpe harbour. Evenings are made for watching the crimson sunset over the Arabian Sea from Kaup Lighthouse or enjoying street food around Manipal's Tiger Circle.

For nature enthusiasts, an early morning day trip into the Western Ghats via Someshwara and Agumbe offers misty rainforest walks and cascading waterfalls.

Mangalore International Airport (IXE), located at Bajpe on a hill overlooking the coast, is the primary airport serving Manipal, MAHE students, KMC doctors, and Udupi tourists.

The 62 km route runs along the 4-lane NH-66 highway through Kaup, Padubidri, Mulki, and Surathkal before climbing Bajpe road. Driving time is typically 1 hour 20 minutes in normal traffic.

To ensure a stress-free check-in, we recommend leaving Manipal 3.5 hours prior to domestic flight departure and 4 to 4.5 hours before international flights. For early morning red-eye departures (e.g. 5:00 AM or 6:00 AM flights), pre-booking your cab ensures a dedicated driver is waiting outside your doorstep on time.

Malpe Beach is the most active beach on the coast, featuring a Sea Walk promenade, jet ski rentals, parasailing, and boat connections to St. Mary's Island.

Kaup Beach offers a dramatically different atmosphere, with tranquil sands framed by rocky boulders and a historic 100-foot lighthouse. Padubidri Beach, slightly south, is a certified Blue Flag beach recognized for pristine water quality, eco-friendly facilities, and safety.

Further north, Maravanthe Beach provides one of the country's most iconic coastal road panoramas.

The Sri Krishna Matha, established in the 13th century by Saint Madhvacharya, is the spiritual cornerstone of Udupi. A unique tradition here is that Lord Krishna is worshipped not directly facing the entrance, but through the sacred Kanakana Kindi—a silver-plated 9-hole window where Saint Kanakadasa was blessed with a vision of the deity.

Darshan timings begin at 5:30 AM with Nirmalya Visarjana and continue through the day until the 8:30 PM Night Puja. Devotees of all backgrounds are welcome to participate in the grand Annadana (sacred midday meal) served in the temple dining halls.

Modest attire is expected (men typically remove shirts or wear dhotis for inner sanctorum entry). Footwear stands are available outside Car Street.

With its location between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, Manipal is a premier springboard for weekend getaways.

For cool mountain breezes and coffee estate stays, head south-east to Coorg (Madikeri) via the Sampaje Ghat, or east into Chikmagalur via Charmadi Ghat. Both trips take around 4 to 4.5 hours and are ideal for 2-night holidays.

If you prefer beaches and temple heritage, take NH-66 north to Murudeshwar and Gokarna, exploring Om Beach and Kudle Beach. For a spiritual weekend, the pilgrimage circuit covering Dharmasthala, Kukke Subrahmanya, and Karkala can be completed in two comfortable days.
